Lexus Centre
An exciting key for the redevelopment of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Centre into the Lexus Centre was the return of this heritage listed building to its original shape. The building, the last venue from the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games retained in Melbourne, has been restored to reflect the key external elements of the original award winning design.
Olympic Park
Situated in the heart of Melbourne's unique sports and entertainment precinct, Olympic Park Stadium has always been a special part of Melbourne.
The site was developed for the 1956 Olympic Games, with the building of two stadiums, a velodrome, and a new world standard 5,500 seat swimming pool (Lexus Centre). At the Games these facilities accommodated hockey, soccer, athletics, swimming and diving. In the 1960s and 1970s, sports such as swimming, athletics, rugby and soccer were well patronised, with athletics attracting over 900,000 spectators annually. In 1972 the velodrome was demolished and converted into an 800-space car park, and both of the stands were covered for patron comfort.
